Building Bridges between East and West through Education and Cultural Exchange
Album: Old Cheeloo University Site in Jinan
In March, 2016, I had the chance to explore the site of the early Cheeloo University in Jinan which dates to 1901/02 and which later evolved into present day Shandong University.
We walked the streets of the Shandong Medical Training College searching for older buildings with connections to the earliest medical training times here. It was one of the first such centres in China devoted to Western medicine and was a united project of a number of Western Christian missionary organizations, primarily British and American, but also including Canadian Presbyterians.

Jinan is the capital of Shandong Province and is located in the north and east part of China.
Gate erected in 1924 at the time of a significant expansion of medical training here at Cheeloo University.
Now known as the Alumni Gate of Shandong University, it is at the original campus from which Shandong University developed.
Probably an early chapel or assembly hall built as part of the united efforts of the different Western partner organizations.
Passage way at the back of the chapel, with cross symbols representing both Christianity and the practice of medicine.
Row houses linked to the chapel at this front street part of the campus.
The recently developed administrative centre for the current Shandong University Medical College.
The campus is located at #44 Wenhua West Road.
Hospital buildings located just across the street from the medical college campus.
A beautifully designed older building from the early campus construction.
A large modern building with a bust of the famous Canadian doctor, Norman Bethune.
Entrance detail to the same building.
A large display of a famous painting of Dr Bethune meeting Mao Zedong in Yan’an during Japanese occupation.
One floor appears to be devoted to the training in pharmacology.
A house constructed in the early 1900s, still in use on the campus.
Detail showing the Tudor half-timber architectural style.
Meeting local people on the street, we inquired of any knowledge of the history of this place.
Another Western-styled house with veranda and balcony.
Neighbouring houses.
Site of a conversation with a resident and passersby, discussing the history of these houses.
Same house from different vantage point.
The square and statue here are in front of the residence for International students. We chatted with two from Zambia.
Li Shizhen, 1518-93, famous pharmacologist and physician of Chinese medicine.
Another large building of early 20th century construction.
Also, appears to be early 20th century construction.
More early Western-style residences.
Front view of an early house.
Rear view of this same house.
A tower that captured our attention as we walked through the campus.
Gates open, we entered to explore further.
The current interior.
Other buildings, seemingly in the process of demolition.
We learned that demolition was halted to preserve these early student residence.
The signage informed us this was a clinic specializing in throat disease.
