The Canadian Snowbirds Aeronautical Team has their home base in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, which is just an hour’s drive from my hometown in Regina. I’ve selected here just a few of the many picture that I shot one Sunday afternoon as the Snowbirds put on one of their famous shows. They perform all over North America, and are a favorite performance for our National Day on July 1 each year in our national capital city, Ottawa.
People everywhere seem to be interested in air shows. We gathered here to view a performance by the famous Canadian Snowbirds.
This part of Canada is a very flat land. Pilots from many different countries come here to learn how to fly military aircraft.
These are training jets. In fact they are rather old, but they do the job very well.
At the start of the show we first recognize the jets streaming towards us when they turn on the smoke that leaves their trail in the sky.
For many of their maneuvers, nine planes fly in formation.
We are viewing a performance at the “home base” for this aeronautical flying team.
The Snowbirds perform all over North America, and we are lucky we get a chance to see them perform at home.
The show is rather dramatic. Still pictures do not do it justice, as we say.
They really do fly very closely together. Accidents are very rare.
Some other countries do performances with more powerful military jet fighters, but the Canadian approach attempts to create art in the sky.
They perform many different maneuvers. I am showing only a few here.
First of a series of photos showing planes approaching head-on, as we say.
Hmmm… they do plan to be close, but still miss each other.
Thankfully, they have been successful again today.
This a rather simple standard maneuver…
… what we may call “writing in the sky.”
Haha… almost a “kiss” at the end of this maneuver.
one of four…
two of four…
three of four…
four of four…
Flying “belly to belly” we might say.
I was shooting this one with a camera that snaps multiple photos per second…
… when i was lucky enough to capture the rest of the team entering my picture unexpectedly.
The flat prairie landscape of this part of Canada can be rather boring, so we really do enjoy sights in the skies.
Start of a dramatic “star burst.”
Coming out of the dive just over the spectators.
The full “star burst.” Very beautiful to see with all the sound and action.
