Rizhao (Shandong) Lovely Coastal City Photos from my brief visit to Rizhao in October, 2007. Shandong Province. Jinan is the capital. Qingdao is the largest city; Rizhao (subject of this album) is a growing industrial centre. (MapPoint image.) Recongized by the UN as one of the worlds most “inhabitable cities.” Twenty years ago, Rizhao was but a coastal fishing village. Now has 2 million. In Rizhao at the invitation of a Chinese professor who had spent a year in Canada as a visiting scholar. Five universities share this campus. Here we are at a restaurant, flanked by two lovely hostesses. I seldom see traditional dress in China, but it is common dress for staff in restaurants. Well planned with broad clean streets, Rizhao is very attractive. Shining glass, steel and concrete characterize new construction in Rizhao as elsehere in China. Another housing development… typically filled by workers moving from the countryside to the booming coastal cities. The seashore and fishing port area is also the focus of a building boom. Development here is in preparation for the upcoming Olympic sailing events Along the waterfront there is more new development. This will be a site for the Olympic Sailing event. Perhaps these boats are for the Olympics sailing officials, or maybe longer-term for the expected tourist trade. Access to the marina docks. Lots of marina space for the crafts of future millionaires! Fishing boats heading out to sea. Traditional life continues as local people work the fishing boats. I’m always impressed with the beauty of Chinese landscape engineering. Few people were enjoying the marina area this day, but one fisherman had a lovely spot to drop his line. A friend joins him to pass the time. At a nearby location, maybe a husband and wife will try their luck. A bit later, some inquisitive on-lookers join them. Prime housing development overlooks the marina and ocean. This appears to be a group of sailing students preparing to practice their maneuvers. Finally, all afloat, they headed out to open sea… with a lonely wind surfer watching here from the foreground. With sailing students out at sea, some tourists are enjoying the seaside. The sail-styled shelter in the background was a common sight at many waterfronts in China. Ahh… more retirees who know how to enjoy life. In the distance a shipping pier. And maybe those with buckets, are some local people out to gather seafood for dinner. The light house was only part of the attractions here. Diligent cleaners, dressed in their uniforms, are also an attractive sight. And for the few tourists, today… a convenient conveyance. Nearby, the tour bus is waiting for the tourists to return. Tranquil beauty.
